A Three-Hour Webinar Intensive with Poet Fleda Brown

Some of the finest, richest poems come from those moments when we discover the magic in the ordinary. You know this! In this workshop, we’ll begin by reading several poems by well-known poets as examples. Then, using prompts to get you to material with most potential, you’ll gather notes to write a draft of a poem. (If you already have a piece of writing you want to expand and shape, you could bring it and work with that.) Whatever draft you're working from, we'll experiment with different shapes and forms for your poem, looking for the one that feels most authentic to what you have written. There will be time to share what you’ve written or discovered about your poem.

Who Should Take This Class

This class is appropriate for those with any amount of experience writing poetry, from those who are interested in learning more and might be a bit nervous about it, to writers with years of experience who want to generate new work and brush up on elements of craft and be exposed to new contemporary writers.

Format

About the Facilitator

Fleda Brown’s tenth collection of poems, Flying Through a Hole in the Storm (2021) won the Hollis Summers Prize from Ohio University Press. Earlier poems can be found in The Woods Are On Fire: New & Selected Poems, chosen by Ted Kooser for the University of Nebraska poetry series in 2017. Her work has appeared three times in The Best American Poetry and has won a Pushcart Prize, the Felix Pollak Prize, the Philip Levine Prize, and the Great Lakes Colleges New Writer’s Award, and has twice been a finalist for the National Poetry Series.
